Second Semester

We are now about 3 weeks into the second semester. It's sad because the sense of hope that everyone had at the beginning (when we all thought we could be straight A students) is gone.

I'm happy because the two classes I liked the least have been replaced with 2 new classes that I like a lot more. Unfortunately, I am having a hard time staying focused, which is problematic because everyone else seems to be rising to the challenge. I've noticed that people seem to be working even harder than last semester.

I've also vowed to try and be more friendly this semester. Some of the other members of my section have decided we should do more outings as a group because even though we are pretty much a very friendly group, we tend to just go home and study and go to bed rather than being social. I think that law school will definitely seem friendlier if we all make more of an effort.

As it turns out, I just suck..

So as it turns out, I actually did fine in most of my classes. I'm just overly dramatic. I'm still waiting to see if the Torts grade posted is a final or a midterm grade.. I have no idea. The website says it's a midterm grade, but it also says that Torts was a two semester class when it was actually a one semester class. Sigh. I really hope it's a midterm grade, cause it would be my lowest grade by far as a final grade.

I served as a juror at a NITA mock trial today. NITA is apparently an organization that does continuing education for lawyers and this trial was the conclusion of a one-week trial skills program. It was an interesting experience and the lawyers in the program were very happy to have our feedback and very encouraging to us students which was nice. I'm feeling pretty decent about the semester, but I still have my fingers crossed about that Torts grade.

Reconsidering

I've been seriously reconsidering spending any more money on law school. I'm not terribly excited about the grades I got back and there are lots of little things about lawschool that I don't like.

(For example the standard skirt suit and what I've been told is the standard resume format for lawyers. Having finally managed to cram my resume into 1 page, I was very upset when I saw the changes my new career counselor made. The formating she picked is so visually unappealing it makes me wonder if anyone in the legal field has any appreciation for the visual arts at all. Sigh.)

Sick feeling in the pit of my stomach...

Grades for 3 out of 4 of my classes are due to be posted tomorrow. The fourth class should be posted next Monday. I am wondering if I should wait to look until all 4 are up so that I get the whole picture or if I should just go ahead and look tomorrow.

I did finally see my midterm grade for Torts, which I avoided looking at mid-semester because we were not permitted to look at what we got right and wrong, so I decided it would be an exercise in futility. I received a "B" --- my school normalizes on the bell curve to a B-, so that means I was somewhere in the top half, but pretty far down in that half. I really hope that my finals were better because I would like to either transfer or be considered for a merit scholarship, both of which require excellent grades. I do feel I did better on the final than on the midterm, but I don't know if I did well enough.

Ack! So much stress.

Note to lawyers: learn the difference between that and which -- grammar errors in professional documents drive me crazy!

Break Glorious Break!

We've just returned from Christmas in NJ. I was looking forward to the Rose Parade today, but unfortunately, due to downpour, we elected not to leave the house. I did watch some of the floats on tv and they appeared to be falling apart.

It's amazing what a little wind and a lot of rain can do. All of the pool furniture in our building is blown over, tossed around and mangled. I'm sure that in lower lying areas, they are dealing with flooding too. I'm so glad we flew back on Saturday because today we would have been stuck in the airport all day because I'm sure they are being very careful flying in this weather.
